Non-US Citizens Vote In Next US President

Not normally political, and completely off-topic for this site, what rights do the rest of the world have in the US elections?

The answer is none. And rightly so. So why pose the qustion? The Internet, blogging and social media has made the world far smaller. So if we have become a global village, are we moving towards an influence on world matters?

Probably not. But I sit here, in the UK worried. The US president has his finger on lots of buttons.

I could say more but I won't. I know nothing of US politics, but it would be interesting to have my view tested - based purely on TV images, I have to say I go for the person. And while I'm not so niaive to believe presidential candidates aren't highly trained media-savvy experts, I have to say that my preference is the democrats and Obama.

Now imagine a world where we could actually vote? How would non-US citizens vote?

Ian - I don't blame you for being worried when they have someone like Bush in power.

I am finding the US campaigns interesting, but I'm not sure which one I'd vote for.

Cath,

Bush worries me immensely. I don't know enough about US politics to make an informed choice.

I have very shallowly based it upon impressions of the individual.

But the candidates are effectively highly trained actors!

They know how to project the right image.

Without knowing policies or anything, it would be interesting to hear how non-US citizens would vote form around the world based upon the media we see which is not all US-based but has gone through local channels and journalists.

Ian - that is a good point. No wonder so many former actors go into politics over there.

Plus the campaigns cost them millions too, so they need to have friends with deep pockets.

I guess a lot of people will vote for Hilary because she's a woman and Obama because he's black.

I was only 9 when Thatcher got in, and I can remember really wanting her to win because she was a woman. In fact, I got so excited and nervous as the night of the election went on that I puked in my bed!

Many people deny making choices based on such simple things, but I bet a lot of them do.

I think that the world should definitely have a say in who gets to be American president. I really get the impression sometimes that people outside the US have a better idea of whats going on there than actual voting US citizens.

I'd vote Obama and I will continue to search for an online voting system for people of the world affected by the decisions of the White House.
