Struggling Or Going Bust - Think Big To Get Out Or Even Rise From The Ashes After Your Demise

Here's How Thinking Big Can Get You Out Of A Hole - Especially When Times Are Tough

When we were in our death throes as a business, the last thing on my mind was success.

When we became resigned to our demise, something changed.

Call it hysteria? Call it madness? Call it what you want, but we decided "what the hell? let's just go for it again!"

Now I'd be lying if I said the dark moments ended there. They didn't. In fact there were still a few lows as we negotiated and nearly had to declare bankruptcy personally.

BUT if we had taken this cavalier, completely counter-intuitive attitude, perhaps even 6 months earlier, then perhaps it wouldn't have ended.

In hindsight, I'm glad it did end. We got an opportunity as a result to wipe the slate clean from a business perspective and apply our experiences of what to do and what not to do.

So If You're Struggling, Here's How You Can Turn Things Before It's Too Late

Firstly, after you've read this next bit, close your eyes. Think of all the bad stuff that's happening now for a moment. Now open them and list them in a column on the left had side of a sheet of paper. As many bad things as you can imagine.

For example, lack of working capital, pressure from authorities on taxes, falling sales, ineffective marketing etc.

Now on the right side of page, write down the complete opposite of each thing you have written on the left-hand side.

Now re-read the right hand column. This is your destination. It's the red-dot on the picture. Your destination.

Each day, re-read that list. By re-programming your thinking and tuning into the good stuff, it is magical how easy it is to start spotting your commercial salvation and success.

Don't believe me? Are you too low to see it? Well what happened to use is an example. We turned the corner. We started again. We focused on the good stuff and it started happening.

Want to know how to focus? Here's how: The Future's Bright, The Future's Not Grey to discover how.

Plan: Choosing Where You Want To Be Is The First Step On A Journey To A Much Better Place

And I don't mean a 27 page business plan. I mean a simple goal. Something that symbolises your arrival at a happy destination.

Once you get that goal firmly in your mind, you will start to see the means of getting there.

By focusing on the steps that get you closer, you will find that the bad stuff - the stuff you wrote in the left hand column - will start to lose their impact. In fact, one by one, they will vanish of their own accord.

You may not even have to solve many of them. They will turn from a large boulder blocking your path, to a small pebble you can simply step over to continue.

Great Points. It really are the little things that can propel us or hold us back.

Hi Ian - I have had to resubscribe to your blog. The posts weren't showing up as soon as you posted!

This is a brilliant article. And as you say, we don't need to write a whole book to know where we want to be - something brief will do.

This makes me thing of those companies, with long and meaningless mission statements. Rainbow had one long that, and don't think any of the staff had a clue what it meant.

I hope your aunty is ok. How come your dad lives in Dubai then? I thought you weren't even allowed to drink over there.

I know an air hostess who used to stay over in Dubai and she said that they had to order drink from room service and sign a document to say they were alcoholics!

Ian,

I like the way you are giving your readers such valuable information, in very simple ways.

Who doesn't have a piece of paper and pencil? Who can't list the bad, and figure out the opposite? Two simple steps, the right mindset, and success can be theirs, just as it has been for you.

Another superb post.

Thanks Barbara.

I really enjoy writing these blog posts. It helps me too. Writing in a blog helps you crystalise your thoughts.

So it's helping me almost write our business plan and principles "live" for the world to see as well as us.

I'm trying to stick to simplicity for both ourselves and anyone reading. That way it can work.

We sometimes (me especially!) try to overcomplicate things.

And it aint necessary.

Racer/Cath,

I'd actually replied to those comments but I obviously didn't submit it! Apologies!

Thanks for the great feedback as always.

Aunty isn't too well at all - not likely she'll make a proper recovery.
